Belfast health tech firm Neurovalens picked for UK startup scheme

Neurovalens, the Belfast tech company behind a headset developed to treat neurological health issues has been chosen for a major UK-wide programme. Neurovalens is one of 30 firms around the UK which has been selected for government body Tech Nation’s Upscale 5.0 programme, which supports fast-growing tech companies.

The company’s Modius headset aims to treat neurological health issues by influencing the brain and nervous system using non-invasive technology. It aims to replace drugs as the first-line treatments for obesity, diabetes, insomnia and anxiety. The headset was developed by Neurovalens chief executive Dr. Jason McKeown, who is a neuroscientist.

He has developed the Modius Sleep, to help people with sleep disorders, while the Modius Slim was designed to help people control their weight. Last year, Mr McKeown explained that the headset “taps into the power of the brain’s hypothalamus, which acts as a mini-computer and influences many areas of the brain, including weight loss and sleep”.

Some of the biggest successes stories of UK tech, such as digital bank Monzo, energy company Bulb and tech firm Improbable, have been through the programme, aimed at tackling leadership challenges. Tech Nation said the 30 new companies represent the next generation of digital household names.
